Spring Allergens

The early Spring pollen tend to be from TREES. Although Northern Arizona is vastly dominated by ponderosa pine trees, it should be of little concern to allergic patients. While the pollination is often quite dramatic- noticeable yellow pollen, it is rare to be allergic to ponderosa pine pollen (approximately 1-2% of patients).  Most patients tend to have more problems with pollen that are not as visually evident such as:

  • Ash
  • Aspen
  • Birch
  • Cedar
  • Cottonwood
  • Elm
  • Mesquite
  • Oak
  • Olive
  • Palo Verde
  • Pecan
  • Privet
  • Sycamore
  • Walnut
  • Willow

Animal dander is a perennial allergen (year round) and patients could have allergic issues. Most common animals in this region are:

  • Bird
  • Cat
  • Cattle
  • Dog
  • Goat
  • Gerbil
  • Hamster
  • Horse
  • Rabbit
  • Rat

While dust mites are not normally found in Northern Arizona, we do offer testing, as many patients travel between Flagstaff and other regions.
